Lukaku: £75million Reasons to Be Excited About

Lukaku delivered a £75million buzz to the Old Trafford Faithful!

Back in March 2017, Jose Mourinho gave Ed Woodward a list of players necessary for a Manchester United revival.

The squad of last year was technical and got the job done at the Europa League. Mourinho often spoke of being pragmatic throughout the 2016/2017 season. That pragmatism brought home the Europa League trophy and a ticket to the Champions League, a remarkable accomplishment since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure from Old Trafford in 2013.

But the league performance suffered. It wasn’t so much the losses that killed United’s hope of a decent league finish. They only lost 5 games. The same number of losses as last year’s league winner Chelsea. The problem? Brutal draws: United’s inability to convert chances into goals saw them draw game after game after game.

Yes, they had an unbeaten streak of 25 matches. But that wasn’t enough to rise to the top as the devils of old did. While Manchester United could have finished as high as 2nd or 3rd, 6th was the end result after a long season of restructuring and pragmatism.

Enter Lukaku.

After a sensational transfer hijacking, Jose Mourinho landed Lukaku for £75million. Chelsea could have signed the (former) Everton striker. Except, destiny and Mourinho had other plans. In a matter of 36 hours, Lukaku’s transfer was sealed.

This year’s Premier League opening weekend excited football fans like never before. The sheer number of goals was remarkable. A total of 31 goals in 10 games. 4 of those scored by Manchester United, with a double contribution by our man Romelu Lukaku.

Sky Sports’ Gary Neville, Thierry Henry, and Graeme Souness were impressed with the new squad. And for good reason. Lukaku, Rashford, Matic, Mikhytarian, Pogba, Jones, and co. played a superb game. They dominated West Ham United.

Although this is the first weekend of the new 2017/2018 season, there is much to look forward to. Manchester United fans haven’t seen in ages. If the squad performs as good as they did this weekend, David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal’s tenures will be committed to the dustbins of history.
